Try the craft: an editorial exercise
Write a scene with a character, a concrete objective and one obstacle. Give each spoken line a purpose and remove any line that merely repeats the previous one. Read it aloud, timing pauses as well as dialogue. Write a second ending that changes the consequence instead of only the wording. Label the scene as your own fiction.
